DIY Mail Truck Costume

Beep Beep! Costume coming through!  All you’ll need is a cardboard box, paint, and a few more tools listed below to create this adorable DIY mail truck.

Note: Adult helper required (this project requires cutting!)

You can take many routes to create this costume; below, you’ll find basic instructions, but let creativity be your GPS!

Make the Truck Body

  1. Seal the cardboard box with packing or masking tape to make it more sturdy as you cut. Decide which end will be the front of your truck and which will be the back.

2. Next, make the armholes. Use a box cutter to cut out a semicircle about 8-10″ in diameter on each side (about 3 inches from the back).

3. Now, cut the side and back closure flaps of the box. Leave the front flap; this will be your windshield.

4. Next, create the angled hood. Draw a 45º angle on both sides of the box and cut it out using the box cutter.

Decorate Your Mail Truck:

1. Paint your mail truck.

2. While your truck is drying, cut out the decorative printables and plan how you’re going to decorate!

3. Once the truck is dry, attach the wheels and printable shapes!

Tip: We glued the wheels to cardboard to give them structure, but you can also use paper plates as your base.

5. Tape the front flap of the box along the angled side to create a hood. Finish building your truck by cutting off the box’s bottom flaps (so it’s easy to step inside!)

4. Make your truck wearable by adding ribbon straps. Measure according to your child’s height, and attach the straps to the truck with hot glue, staples, or by tying them through holes in the side.
