Optional: Print out this recipe and keep it handy as you bake

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter or margarine

  • 1 cup of sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 2 3⁄4 cups flour

  • Food coloring

Tools:

  • Rolling pin

  • Cookie sheet

  • Cookie cutters

How to Play:

  • Mix butter and sugar in a bowl, then add the egg and vanilla extract.

  • Separate the cookie dough into three balls, approximately the same size.

  • Take one ball and mix in a few drops of yellow food coloring.

  • Mix the red food coloring into the next ball, and mix the blue food coloring into the third.

  • Roll out the cookie dough balls on a lightly floured board. If you want to combine colors, go for it!

  • Cut out the cookies using a cookie cutter.

  • Bake at 400 degrees for 7-10 minutes.

  • The cookies should be light in color with light browning on the edges.

  • Let them cool. Then, dig in!

How to Involve Your Child:

  • Let them explore kitchen items like pots, pans, and whisks while you bake.

  • Ask them to be your helper by giving you the food coloring, supplies, etc.

  • Give them some cookie dough to roll into small balls and flatten with their hands.

  • Needs supervision: put your hand over their hands to flatten the dough.

  • Build vocabulary by talking aloud about how the cookie dough looks and feels: blue, red, yellow, soft, squishy, round, flat, etc.

  • If you combine the colors, talk about the new colors you create when you mix.

  • Get their help serving the cookies to real (or stuffed animal) friends!

  • Don’t forget to wash up! Your little learner will love getting their hands a little wet.
