5 Tips for Kid-Powered Reading
Mix It Up
The world is full of fiction and nonfiction books with stories to enjoy, lessons to learn, and fascinating information to discover! Share a wide variety of books with your child to fuel their imagination and curiosity about the world around them.
Learn a Little (Learn a Lot)
Getting the same bed-time story request night after night? The book may give a clue into what your child is thinking, feeling, or wondering. You can use the books your child wants to read as an opportunity to learn more about their wants and needs.
Lean Into Their Interests.
Books that prioritize things kids love can help them stay more engaged and excited about reading time. Developing their interests also provides them with opportunities to build self-esteem and express themselves; it’s a win-win-win!
Take on challenges together.
By reading aloud together, you can dive into books that are longer and more advanced than your child is ready to read independently and inspire them to work towards reading those stories on their own.
Make Reading Your Go-To
You’re in a doctor’s waiting room, or on a bus ride, or waiting on your wash-cycle at the laundromat. Why not pull out a book to read to your child to pass the time? Reading everywhere shows your child that reading is a rewarding way to spend time—anywhere and any time!
Reading List Bookmark
Many books you’re reading together may not be very long, but a bookmark can help you dive into longer stories together. It’s also a great way to introduce the concept of starting and stopping while reading!

Scissors
Glue
Cardboard or cardstock (optional)
Assembling Your Bookmark:
Cut out both sides of the bookmark along the blue lines.
Glue the two sides together (or glue them to either side of a piece of cardstock for a sturdier bookmark.)
Invite your child to decorate the bookmark and write the books you have read or would like to read on each list.
Add a ribbon or tassel to your bookmark for a special touch!
Play Tips:
Have a book your child loves revisiting? Use the bookmark to celebrate their favorite moment in the story.
Build motivation by encouraging your child’s “I did it!” moment any time they can move a book from the “want to read” to “have read” list.
When your child has read all the books on the list, it might be time for another bookmark! Your child can collect their reading list bookmarks as their library grows!
